Kappad Beach

If you want to enjoy the gorgeous view of relaxing summer waves, you must be heading to the rock-studded Kappad Beach. It is only about 16 km from the city of Kozhikode in the Malabar region of Kerala on the NH 17. A plaque that is set on a pillar on the beach commemorates this historic happening and states that Vasco Da Gama first set his foot here on 27th May 1498 with about 170 men who came in three vessels. The beach is locally referred to as Kappakadavu. History tells us that the Portuguese later grew to a formidable power in India. Other than this announcement, the beach is a quiet idyllic one. The common sight is one of the fishermen pushing their boats onto the sea. It is one of the must-see tourist spots in Kerala. On the beach, one can see a rockhead protrude into the sea with a temple on top of it. This temple is said to be over 800 years old. On the route to Kappad, an interesting spot to visit is the Elathur estuary. The Elathur Bridge lies across the river. Once can see mounds of harvested mussels for sale along the river banks. Another must-visit is the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary which is about 19 km from Kozhikode and spread across a group of islands. More than 100 species of native birds and over 60 species of exotic migratory birds are seen here between the months of November and April.
