Ootty

Travel back in time to the cooler climate of Ooty, the most popular summertime destination of South India. Located in the Nilgiri Hills, Ooty is fondly referred to as the "Queen of the Nilgiris". Other names for Ootty are Ootacamund, Udagamandalam, and Udhagai. The capital of Nilgiris district is a sought after tourist destination, especially by honeymooners. Situated at a height of 2, 240 metres above the sea level, Ooty is famous for its tea estates. Lofty mountains, sprawling grasslands, dense forests, and numerous tea gardens greet the travellers on most routes. Ooty, a town and a municipality in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, lies about 86 kilometres to the north of Coimbatore, which is well known for its textile and engineering industries. Ootty was originally occupied by people belonging to the Toda tribe. The East India Company established its supremacy in the area towards the close of the 18th century. The town is well connected by Ghat roads and Nilgiri Mountain Railway. A ride in Nilgiris Mountain Railway, a metre gauge train that operates between Mettupalayam and Ootty, is not to be missed when visiting the hill town. Built by the British in 1908 in their summer capital, it is the only rack railway in India. Other places of tourist interest include the artificial lake in the centre of the town, botanical gardens, rose gardens, thread gardens, and Doddabetta peak, among others
